Living in the present Westernized society sure has changed the experience of nature. Seemingly self-functioning metropolis has swollen the wilderness like a malignant cancer. Where there used to be a wild territory, houses went up like mushrooms transforming a green horizon into an immense dull-brown shingle-field. Countless animal habitats were ruthlessly intruded upon. Nevertheless, these colossal concrete structures are surrounded by nature - the miniscule patches of grass, which amusingly still causes ‘mowing' disputes between neighbours. A cast of a tree provides a border between camping sites! Surely, that's just an illusion of privacy. What has ‘nature' become for you? Is it your imitation plant on the window ledge? When was the last time you stood on top of the escarpment, filling in your lungs with rejuvenating air particles, screaming on top of your voice and still were the only person around to hear your own echo? It's true; the natural environment is continuously invaded and changed for our own selfish urban convenience. Change is inevitable! Just remember that virtuous deeds are attributed to individuals. It is a responsibility of each and every one of us to preserve and protect the wild environment in its natural state. Let us all make sure that our children and the children of their children get to enjoy it with their senses and not in the form of an old photograph. |
